To further assist our town’s residents who may be diagnosed with autism the Secaucus Police Department will now be participating in the Blue Envelope program. This program is another way for our department to assist our communities most vulnerable and their loved ones. The purpose of the Blue Envelope program is to make a motor vehicle stop less strenuous on a driver with autism/special needs or their caregiver who may be driving the person with autism/special needs, as well as the police officer who pulled the vehicle over.
Printed on the front of the envelope are instructions for the driver explaining what documents the officer will need and what to expect during the motor vehicle stop. On the rear are instructions for the officer explaining how they should speak and interact with the driver and why the driver or a passenger might be acting differently than others would on a motor vehicle stop.
In the envelope should be all paper copies only of the driver’s license, registration and vehicle insurance. Also there will be an emergency contact card and a card explaining the driver/passenger’s medical condition.
Anyone interested in receiving a Blue envelope for themselves or their loved one please contact the Secaucus Police Department (201-330-2060) or email Officer Salvatore Manente Jr ([email protected]).
