Police in Secaucus investigated the report of a man walking with what appeared to be the butt of a rifle sticking out of a backpack on Thursday, but found nobody matching the description, authorities said.

Secaucus police Capt. Dennis Miller said a passerby flagged down a pair of officers in the area of Golden and Pandolfi avenues just after 5:30 p.m. and told them a man in his mid-30s had been walking in the area with the weapon. The suspect was wearing all black clothing and carrying a black backpack, the person told police.
